Doug

Yeah, I haven't written in a long while. It's not like me to not have SOMETHING to say. I guess I've been busy. I've always been one of those people that uses being "busy" as an excuse for things. I've never really meant it. Now I mean it. Between work and school and Brianna and Todd and my friends...well, there's just no time for anything else. I suppose it's nice to have a full life again, but it's somewhat discouraging to have no time for me.

Anyway...before I go any further, I have to say...

I MET DOUG TUESDAY NIGHT!!!

Yes. I know. It's hard to believe. Let me just tell you how the day went. I left work early so that I could come home and properly "prepare" for the trek to Austin. Todd came over and we went to Jenny's and picked up Jenny and Sarah. My excitement was brewing, but I knew everyone was sick of hearing "We're going to see Doug" every ten minutes, so I kept it to myself. We got to town about 8. The tickets said that doors opened at 9. They were all assuring me that Doug wouldn't come on til 10 or so, but the way the show was billed, it was unclear whether or not there was an opening band. SO we double-parked in front of the Mercury and I made Todd run up and find out exactly what time he came on. The girl told him 9:30 and she really didn't know if there was an opening band. Soooo...armed with that information, we parked and walked down to Casino el Camino to eat and have some beers. I couldn't eat a thing, I was so excited. I was squirmy and constantly checking the clock. At exactly 9:15, I insisted that we walk back to the Merc. I explained that if I missed even ONE second of Doug, heads were gonna roll. We get to the show and get our beers (Lone Star, in case you care about that)and head over to the stage to stake our claim on the front row. Apparently there WAS an opening act, one of Doug's friends from Idaho. WHile he's playing, I see Doug walk out from backstage and just stand there watching his friend. I was FREAKING out. Sarah was insistent that I go talk to him, but he seemed so intent on watching the show, that I didn't want to bother him. But we made excuses to go to the bar so I could walk by him numerous times. It was really quite fangirlish and sick. After Ian finished playing, I could tell that Doug was going to go backstage and Jenny kept saying "Now's your chance Kris. Go now or you won't get to meet him" So I said "Come with me" and she said "Hell no. Take Todd" Thanks.

Todd was the dutiful boyfriend and he went with me, armed with my camera. I walked right up to him and said hi and he smiled and said "thanks for coming to the show" and I asked if he'd mind taking a picture with me and he said "Sure" and then Todd couldn't figure out where to look through on my camera and I said "Try the viewfinder" and Doug laughed. And he put his arm around me and it was heavenly and he was wearing a blue hooded jacket like it was cold but it wasn't cause it's Texas and gosh....it was wonderful. When he left, he gave me a little squeeze and said "Thanks again for coming out. Enjoy the show"

He didn't ask him to marry him and have 10 million of his babies, like he does in my daydreams. But, in my opinion, it couldn't have been better. He was sweet and kind and gracious and VERY soft-spoken. I've already taken my camera's memory card to the photo place to have the pics printed and cropped and blown up etc.

I'm going to be pretty excited for awhile, I think.

On the downside, I thnk we're going to skip Songs:Ohia next week. We REALLY want to see Lou Barlow in November and we just bought tickets to see The Strokes and Ben Kweller. PLUS, there's a Beck and Flaming Lips show that we're going to try to score tickets for through a ticket broker. We just can't afford all these shows. The Winter O Rock has officially begun.

Did I mention that Doug did a lot of covers. He did John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" and two Smiths songs "Still Ill" and "This Night has Opened my Eyes". He did "Love Hurts". Holy shit. It was good.

It's rainy and stormy today. I took a vacation day today and so Todd is coming over and we're going to run some eraands and then snuggle in front of the tv. In fact, I need to get out of here and shower.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately, (all three of you that actually READ my diary).

P.S. School sucks ass this semester. And I got a fucking B in Sociology.
